1978 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40
For Sale

Summary

For sale is a 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40. Nearing the end of a long restoration, the BJ40 dropped about half the compression in one cylinder. While the vehicle starts and runs, that cylinder needs to be examined and repaired. Otherwise, as described below, the BJ40 is in near perfect condition – excellent exterior, spotless interior, everything functional, and with lots of upgrades. The odometer reads 67K kilometers (~42K miles), which the original owner claims is the true mileage (and is the mileage on the title) but the total mileage is unknown to me. I wish I could finish this cool project but I am moving and can't take it with me. I have a clean Florida title in my name.

The History

This BJ40 is originally from Costa Rica. It was purchased new in 1978 by a plantation owner who used it as his personal transportation on the large farm. He grows and exports vegetables to the USA. His son, who lives in Miami, handles the importation and distribution of the vegetables in the US. When the son’s children reached driving age, the son had the BJ40 restored in Costa Rica and imported to the States in 2020 as gift for his children. His children weren’t impressed (“a truck?”, “with three pedals?”, “it’s not a BMW”). Hence, I bought it from the son in 2021 as a pandemic hobby.

Setback

The BJ40 just (April 2023) dropped about half the compression in one cylinder (possibly a stuck valve – not sure). While the vehicle still starts and runs, that cylinder needs to be examined and repaired. I am moving in June, won’t have time to make that repair, and can't take the vehicle with me. Therefore, I must sell the BJ40 with this flaw.
